About the Kurd scale

The Kurd scale is probably the most popular handpan tuning worldwide, and for a good reason. It offers a rich, emotional minor sound that’s both expressive and approachable.

Sound:

  • Deeply melancholic and soulful, yet flexible enough to introduce bright major chords for contrast.
  • Known for its warm and natural minor tone, making it ideal for emotional storytelling.
  • Supports a wide variety of moods, from reflective to uplifting.

Structure:

  • Even a 10-note Kurd includes all notes of the natural minor scale.
  • Its logical layout makes it easy to understand musical intervals and chords, perfect for beginners and experienced players alike.
  • When extended with bottom notes, it offers a wide pitch range, from the lowest to highest tones.

Fun fact: Almost all handpan schools use the Kurd scale for group classes due to its versatility and approachability.
