The D Kurd is an all-time classic and probably the most widely played scale in the handpan world now in a smaller, 50cm diameter format. The MAG Mini D Kurd takes the scale to the next level by including a complete minor scale layout without any missing notes making it an excellent choice for anyone learning both handpan and music.

A layout like this would be impossible on a regular-size handpan, due to the difference in surface tension that a smaller shell allows, which opens up tone fields that a full-size instrument simply can’t accommodate.

Its reduced size makes it easier to carry and more comfortable for travelling, and it’s a practical option for children, players with smaller hands, and anyone who finds it difficult to reach the lower tone fields of a full-sized handpan.

Although D Kurd is a minor scale, it can sound surprisingly cheerful and playful, especially with a faster pulse and brighter melodic phrasing, or slow down for an intimate, reflective, and deeply emotional character. Because it contains a full minor scale, many familiar melodies transfer naturally onto it, from film themes like Interstellar and Pirates of the Caribbean to songs by artists such as Linkin Park. Its compact size also makes it especially responsive for fast, percussive playing, capable of powerful rhythmic patterns even in energetic styles like drum and bass.
