What makes a premium handpan?

August 14, 2026

Not sure how to recognize a premium-quality handpan? You’ve come to the right place.

Below, we’ve summarized the key characteristics that distinguish a premium handpan from mass-produced or lower-quality instruments.

What makes a premium handpan?

What makes a premium handpan is:

  • Durable, precise tuning
  • Rich, clear, and balanced sound
  • Crystal-clear notes
  • Excellent harmony between individual notes and across the entire scale
  • Minimal crosstalk between notes
  • Rich resonance
  • Controlled sustain
  • High responsiveness to touch

These qualities determine the overall musical experience and playing feel.

Playing a premium handpan is a completely different experience for both the musician and the listener. The difference is like performing on a noisy street versus playing in a concert hall with perfect acoustics.

Ultimately, these characteristics depend on the instrument maker’s expertise, reliability, years of experience in handpan craftsmanship, the quality of the tools used, and the durability of the materials.

1.  Tuning characteristics

Tuning method

Handpans can only be tuned by hand, however there are significant differences between the tuning expertise and the tuning methods and regimen between mass-produced and premium handpans.

Top-quality handpans are tuned exclusively by experienced craftsmen who have spent years mastering the process and who follow the manufacturer’s strict quality standards.

A truly premium handpan goes through several rounds of tuning with rounds of heat-treatment in-between to achieve the perfect resonance and are stress-tested for durability. This way they can keep their tuning for several years. Or in the case of MAG handpans, even for a whole lifetime.

Tuning accuracy and balance

Tuning is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a handpan, as it directly affects how enjoyable the instrument is to play.

This means that every note should sound exactly as intended for example, a C note should be a true C, and a G♯ should sound precisely as a G♯, without deviation.

You can easily check a handpan’s tuning yourself using an electronic tuner or a smartphone tuning app. The result is displayed on a meter similar to a car’s speedometer. When the indicator points exactly to the center, the note is perfectly in tune.

A precisely and harmoniously tuned handpan produces a warm, pleasant sound. Whether you play individual notes or chords, the instrument should sound clear, balanced, and naturally musical.

Tuning stability

A premium handpan maintains its tuning over time with regular, proper use.Even high-quality instruments may temporarily sound different when exposed to significant temperature changes, such as moving between cold and warm environments. However, once they return to room temperature, a well-tuned handpan will typically regain its original, balanced sound.

With proper care – avoiding drops, excessive heat, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight – a high-quality handpan can typically stay in tune for around  three years before requiring professional retuning.

At MAG Instruments, every handpan is backed by our Lifetime Retuning Warranty, reflecting our confidence in the long-term tuning stability of our instruments.

Retuning

Even premium handpans eventually need to be retuned, especially when played frequently.

Reputable handpan manufacturers always offer professional retuning services for their instruments. If you cannot find any information about retuning, or if the manufacturer (or a reseller claiming to be the manufacturer) does not provide this service, it is often a sign of inferior quality. With our Lifetime Warranty, if any MAG Instruments handpan would go out of tune, our professional tuners will restore it free of charge.

Cheap vs. premium handpans: The difference in tuning

A poorly tuned instrument produces inaccurate notes that sound unpleasant much like someone singing off-key. It is uncomfortable to listen to and frustrating to play.

Mass-produced handpans are typically machine-shadped and as they don’t go through several rounds of tuning like premium handpans and are not stress-tested, their sound is much less reliable and it goes out of tune very easily.

A poorly tuned handpan may not even be suitable for professional retuning, and many experienced workshops are reluctant to work on such instruments. Even when retuning is possible, it typically costs around €200–250 per session, with no guarantee that the tuning will remain stable due to the instrument’s inherently lower build quality.

Sustain

Sustain refers to how long a note continues to ring after it has been struck. For handpans, sustain typically ranges between 6 and 12 seconds, with an average of around 8.3 seconds.

A sustain of around 6 seconds is considered relatively short, while notes lasting 10 seconds or more are considered long.

The ideal sustain is partly a matter of personal preference and playing style, but it is also an important indicator of quality.

A premium handpan has controlled sustain. The notes should neither fade away too quickly nor ring for so long that they overlap excessively and create unwanted interference.

Rather than focusing on a specific number of seconds, what truly matters is achieving a clean, balanced sound that is pleasing to the ear.

Different materials naturally produce different sustain characteristics. For example, Ember Steel handpans are well known for their long sustain, making them ideal for meditative playing. Nitrided Steel handpans, on the other hand, offer a shorter sustain and are generally preferred for more percussive playing styles and rhythm practice.

Even within the premium segment, there are exceptional instruments. For example, Yishama produces unique “mutant” handpans capable of sustaining notes for up to 40 seconds

Balance

Every note across the scale should have a consistent quality, volume, and tonal character. Equally important is the balance between the fundamental note and its overtones. A premium handpan should sound even and balanced throughout the entire scale, with no note standing out as noticeably louder, weaker, brighter, or duller than the others.

Rich resonance

Resonance is the vibration that travels through the body of the handpan after a note is struck. It is this vibration that creates the instrument’s rich, expressive sound.

Strong resonance enhances projection, warmth, fullness, and sustain, allowing the sound to develop naturally and fill the surrounding space.

In a premium handpan, rich resonance means the instrument produces a warm, full-bodied tone with minimal metallic character while maintaining clarity in a wide range of acoustic environments.

To evaluate resonance, try playing the handpan in different settings, such as a quiet room, a larger hall, or outdoors. Listen carefully to whether the sound remains clear, balanced, and naturally fills the space.

Crosstalk between notes

Crosstalk occurs when the vibrations of one note unintentionally excite neighboring tone fields, creating unwanted resonance and a dissonant, less pleasant sound.

On a premium handpan, each note remains clearly defined. Striking one tone field should cause little to no unwanted resonance in the surrounding notes.

Experienced makers minimize crosstalk through careful shell shaping, precise tuning, and thoughtful construction techniques, such as internal damping, to prevent unwanted resonances from developing inside the instrument.

It is important to note that some interaction between notes is completely natural especially on handpans with longer sustain. The ideal amount of crosstalk is also partly a matter of personal preference and playing style.

Touch sensitivity

A premium handpan offers excellent dynamic range and touch sensitivity. This means the instrument responds beautifully to the lightest touch while maintaining a clean, undistorted sound even when played with greater force.

This wide dynamic range allows musicians to express subtle nuances and a broad range of musical dynamics with ease.

Harmonic balance between notes

Each tone field should contain not only the fundamental note but also a precisely tuned octave and the fifth of the double octave.

While this involves music theory, the essential point is simple: proper handpan tuning follows strict acoustic principles. If these principles are not respected during the tuning process, the instrument will never achieve true harmonic balance. As a result, scales, chords, and melodies will sound less cohesive and less pleasing to the ear.

Overtones

A truly premium handpan allows players to produce clear, rich overtones.

Using more advanced playing techniques, it is possible to isolate different harmonics from a single tone field. For example, on a C-based handpan, a skilled player can bring out the fifth (G) overtone by striking specific areas around the note. On a well-crafted instrument, these overtones are easy to produce, clearly audible, and musically rewarding.

TIP: If you have the opportunity to test a handpan, strike four different points around the same tone field (avoiding the central dimple). A properly tuned, high-quality handpan will produce four distinct, clean, and harmonious tones, demonstrating both excellent tuning accuracy and overtone response.

Manufacturing expertise and craftsmanship

A reputable handpan manufacturer is transparent about its instruments, the production process, and the people behind the brand. You should know exactly what you are paying for and be able to rely on after-sales support, retuning services, and professional guidance throughout the lifetime of your instrument.

Why does the manufacturer matter?

This cannot be overstated because the quality of a handpan depends almost entirely on the skill of the maker.

Building a premium handpan requires years of experience, technical expertise, and an exceptional understanding of acoustics and metalworking. Even the smallest variation in shaping the steel, controlling its tension, or tuning the tone fields can dramatically affect the instrument’s sound.

Only experienced handpan makers have the knowledge and craftsmanship to create an instrument that is:

  • precisely tuned
  • stable over time
  • rich, balanced, and harmonious in tone

In the end, craftsmanship makes all the difference. Just as an instant soup can never compare to a homemade broth prepared with decades of experience and care, a mass-produced handpan can never match the sound, consistency, and musicality of an instrument built by an experienced artisan.

Are they true manufacturers or just retailers?

Many businesses selling handpans are not actually manufacturers—they are simply retailers. In many cases, different companies sell the exact same inexpensive, mass-produced instruments imported from overseas, often under different brand names and at premium prices.

When evaluating a brand, watch for these warning signs:

  • They provide little or no information about where or how their handpans are made.
  • The listed business address has no clear connection to the brand or manufacturing facility.
  • They have little or no genuine social media presence.
  • They use photos, videos, or other marketing materials copied from well-known handpan makers instead of showcasing their own instruments.

Handcrafting

Premium handpans are crafted by skilled artisans through several days of meticulous hand hammering and fine tuning, rather than mass-produced by machines. Many established manufacturers assign dedicated specialists to different stages of the production process. At MAG Instruments, for example, we follow the same approach. Much like medical specialists, each craftsman focuses on a specific area of expertise.

This specialization allows every member of our team to develop exceptional technical knowledge and perform each stage of production with the highest level of precision and attention to detail. The result is an instrument with remarkable tonal richness, crystal-clear notes, and outstanding harmonic balance.

Transparency and trust

A reputable handpan manufacturer is open about its production methods, manufacturing location, and the origin of its materials. There are no hidden surprises. They are happy to answer your questions and provide detailed information about their instruments, craftsmanship, and team through their website and social media channels.

Material quality

The type and quality of steel significantly influence a handpan’s sound, tuning stability, and resistance to corrosion.

Premium handpans are typically made from one of the following high-quality steel alloys:

  • Stainless steel
  • Nitrided steel
  • Ember steel

After-sales support and warranty

One of the hallmarks of a premium handpan brand is ongoing customer support. This includes professional retuning services, expert advice, and a comprehensive warranty long after the purchase.

At MAG Instruments, every handpan is backed by a lifetime warranty, giving you complete confidence in your investment.

Mass-produced vs. handcrafted handpans

Low-cost handpans sold through large online marketplaces and overseas retailers can be tempting, often costing only a few hundred euros or dollars. However, a mass-produced instrument can never provide the same musical experience, craftsmanship, or long-term reliability as a handcrafted handpan. Many imported instruments suffer from poor tuning, unknown manufacturing standards, inconsistent quality control, and little or no after-sales support or customer service.
