The Pygmy is one of the first handpan scales.

Its sound is unrivalled, you will immediately recognize it by its haunting yet optimistic sound. The F# Pygmy is not recommended for beginners due to the many high notes on the top and bottom as well, which require more experience to hit.

As Pygmy’s a  pentatonic structure, its sound is extraordinary and full of emotions.

About the Pygmy scale

Sound:

  • Haunting, light, and open — sense of space and otherworldly
  • Because it outlines a single consistent chord across all notes, it creates a strong emotional resonance.
  • Lighter than 7-note scales, playing is calming and makes you feeling the space

 

Structure:

  • A pentatonic scale, missing the 4th and 6th degrees.
  • The reduced note set allows for a wider pitch range than 7-note scales.
  • Extended versions with bottom notes often allow the complete minor scale to be played.

 

Good to know: Unlike Kurd or Amara, Pygmy starts with a second interval from the ding (main tone), giving it a chromatic feel.
